The Estate

The domain of Château Pique-Sègue, of outstanding natural beauty, is composed of rolling woods, nestling hills and valleys, old stone buildings, which extend until the Dordogne. Entering it is already a sensorial Odyssey.

The history of the domain stretches back for more than 700 years, on the Libournais promontory. The vineyard was then already known for elaborating the best wines of Montravel and Bergerac. The Archbishop of Bordeaux had first listed the domain in the 14 th century. A historical anchoring, which will mark the beginnings of the ascension of the vineyard.

As early as the end of the 19 th century, Château Pique-Segue is considered as “One the best agricultural exploitations in the canton” according to the Guide Féret.

The Hills

Henry IV towards the end of XVIth century the time of the signature of Le Fleix Peace, (stopping religion war) watered his horse at the source of Pique-Sègue. Today it is pilgrims to St. Jacques-de-Compostelle who cross the vineyard’s grounds and lanes.

Situated between St Emilion and Bergerac, the domain extends on the hills of the Libournais, with an area of more than 400 ha, of which 66 ha are vines, as well as an important Limousin cattle which acts for animal reproduction HBL, to a high genetical value.

Among the characteristics of the Montravel terroir, the peculiarity of the soil is distinguishable, with its clay-limestone features and moreover flint deposit zones. The presence of Limestone in Ponchapt confirms the terroirs altitude, and offers, due to the southern exposition of the slopes, a natural drainage.

The vineyard

Located on the promontory Libournais, the last hills of Montravel, between St Emilion and Bergerac, the vineyard benefits from an exceptional terroir.

The property, with an area of 400 ha, of which 66 ha are in vines, managed by Philip and Marianne Mallard, comprises also of a large cattle livestock of Limousine race HBL – which acts for animal reproduction, to a high genetical standard.

The wines of the property receive each year a multitude of awards, both in national and international competitions. The professional magazines, such as Decanter, La revue des Vins de France… Yearly references within the best guides and magazines (Guide Hachette, Terre de Vins, Decanter…)

In order to preserve our terroirs expression, we have put in place respectful agricultural practices towards nature and use to a lesser extent chemical fertilizer treatments, in favour of organic compounds from our cattle livestock, thus ensuring the quality and the sanitary health of the grapes. We can be classified under sustainable agriculture.

Mindful to respect the biodiversity of our domain, in assuring the quality of our grapes, our vineyard has received for multiple years the HEV 3 certification, High Environmental Value of level 3.

The Winery

The vast modern Winery of 2,000 m2, dug into the flank of the hillside in order to obtain freshness and isolation in a natural manner; is equipped with the most performant equipment, assuring by physical methods (cold, temperature control, micro-bubbling…) a superior and constant quality as well as vinification to the optimal conditions.

Performance and tradition together correspond to bring out the particularity of the terroir of Château Pique-Sègue, which is under the vigilance of our winemaker and our oenologist.

Château Pique-Sègue is one of the leading producers of the AOC of Montravel. Listed in the 14 th century by the Archbishop of Bordeaux, the vineyard, already at that time, had the reputation of elaborating the best wines of Montravel and Bergerac.
